How-To Train Place With E-Collar | 1st Phase | With Ernie

And here we go! If y’all been good students, then you’ve already worked through the prior How-To videos with prong collar, and also the first e-collar video on how to size/fit the collar, and get the perception level. So if you’re up to speed it’s time to jump into the first command we teach inside, Place.

Why Place? Because it’s a great command to create a foundation for all the other commands. Of course, you could start with Sit, Down, or Recall, but there is a method to our madness. Place is an easy command to begin to create impulse control, teach the “body as a magnet” concept, and get the much desired stationary calmness/relaxed state of mind so many are after. (Down, while technically offering many of the same benefits, is typically a more difficult command for many dogs.)

In this clip, I run through all the details regarding the initial steps of training Place with e-collar. As I say in the video, it looks very easy—but that’s because of all the prior prong work we’ve done. I also dive into many other training concepts and ideas, and share why I work so hard to simplify things, and to create calm dogs…when desired.

For anyone who thinks Ernie looks sad because of the training, I’m sorry, but as I explain in the clip, we work hard to condition a calm dog, and along with that, Ernie is just kind of a slow moving, slightly worried guy in life in general—at least when it comes to doing training work, or anything he’s uncertain about. (We are still very new to each other in this clip.) That said, I could easily take him outside and have fun, turning on his more excited state, but I’m looking to cultivate the other side of the coin for Ernie: the calm, relaxed side of the coin—when desired. I know this is boring, mundane work for many dogs, but that’s okay. (Doing lots of reps inside a quiet house, late at night ain’t a recipe for high excitement.) But trust me, Ernie has already completed his training with us, and I’ve seen the end results, and they’re fun and amazing. So doubters will have to wait until we get to the end of the series to see the whole training enchilada. This is only one dimension of our training work. His playful, frisky, off-leash Recall is quite the sight, and it all comes from this series of videos I’m sharing here. So keep the faith and try hard to understand the entire training objective we’re shooting for. While Ernie is an awesome, sweet guy, he’s also bitten people. So let’s try to not lose sight of reality and the big picture goals. A safe, reliable, awesome dog, who gets to enjoy life, and an owner who does as well. 🙂

Stay tuned for the next How-To!
